Gabriel

Gabriel Salazar Vergara was born on the 31st of January, 1936. He was a prominent figure in Chilean historiography. In Chile, he is popular for his studies in the field of social history as well as the analysis of movements in society. This includes recent student protests that took place in 2006 and the 2011. Salazar was born into a poor family. He went to Universidad de Chile and studied sociology, philosophy and history. He also worked as an assistant to Mario Gongora and Hector Herrera Cajas the great historian. Salazar was one of the Revolutionary Left Movement member from 1973 until 1973. The military tortured him in Villa Grimaldi during that year. Then, in 1976, he was freed from the military prison and was exiled to Britain. In the United Kingdom, he received an award of scholarship which allowed him to continue studies at University of Hull. The university he attended earned the PhD qualification from the department of Economic and Social History in 1984. In the following year, he returned Chile. Salazar was able to make a breakthrough 1985. This is still relatively unnoticed. Salazar's study subjects were labourers, peons and children Huachos[A] and women. 1. Salazar is among the founders of the current of historiography referred to by the name of Nueva Historia Social. Salazar believes that history is an efficient tool to facilitate actions in society.
