Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. While she was a small girl, she struggled with an obsessional disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford began to be fascinated by acting as a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won an interview on her fourth attempt. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also regularly worked in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
